Following an unforgettable inaugural edition, we're excited to announce that the Black Mountain Ultra trail run will return from 15–17 October 2027.
Our first event took place during a period of exceptionally challenging weather across the Klein Karoo. Persistent rain throughout April and May 2026 created significant logistical challenges for the organising team, and while we were incredibly proud to deliver what became a truly memorable event, there were several moments where the race itself hung in the balance.
Rather than leave our future to chance, we’ve taken the opportunity to move the event to October.
While no season can ever guarantee perfect conditions, October typically offers the kind of Klein Karoo weather we love—mild daytime temperatures, longer daylight hours and an incredible landscape beginning to emerge from winter. It creates a better experience for runners, volunteers and spectators alike, while giving us the best possible platform to showcase this remarkable part of South Africa.
The move also places Black Mountain Ultra (BMU) in a less congested part of the trail running calendar, giving runners the opportunity to fully embrace the weekend without having to choose between multiple major events.
Although the date has changed, the heart of Black Mountain Ultra remains exactly the same.
For 2027, we’re carefully reviewing sections of the routes to further improve the overall experience, and we’re particularly excited about some new ideas we’re developing for the 19 km distance. Expect the same wild landscapes, the same authentic Klein Karoo hospitality and the same unforgettable adventure—just refined and even better.

The inaugural edition laid the foundation. Now it’s time to build on it.
